Program Guide

Accelerated Reader: A child’s love of reading is encouraged with this rewarding program. Children read books, take comprehension tests using the computer, and receive points for their effort. Points are redeemed for fun prizes.

Book and a Bite: This lunchtime reading program is a favorite of volunteers and children alike. Volunteers typically read once a month to a group of 5 to 7 students.

Book Fair: Each year the PTA sponsors a book fair for the media center. Parents, students, and staff are given an opportunity to browse and shop for quality books. Proceeds go directly to the Media Center for the purchase of books and other materials.

Campbell’s, General Mills, Tyson: These programs allow us to redeem trash (labels, Box Tops) for things such as school supplies, microscopes, drink dispensers, and books.

Cultural Arts: Artists, writers, singers, and other performers entertain and enlighten the children during the year. The Northwoods PTA, in conjunction with the United Arts Council, schedules and funds the events.

E-mail list: Receive school information, updates, and reminders by e-mail. Send a note tonorthwoodspta@gmail.com to be added to the list.

Fifth Grade Activities: Being on the top of the totem pole offers our fifth graders some special privileges, including a graduation dinner and dance, along with special 5th grade t-shirts.

Koalaty Kid: Every Northwoods student is encouraged to be a Koalaty Kid by doing his or her best. The program celebrates each child’s achievements.

Koalaty Times: The monthly newsletter keeps parents informed about activities and programs at the school. The newsletter is distributed online and by e-mail in order to cut down on paper waste.

Media Center: Volunteers assist the media specialist with various activities, including shelving books and helping students.

Publicity: Communication is vital for an active school such as Northwoods. The Cary News sometimes publishes school news.

Reflections: This program, sponsored through the national PTA, provides a theme each year to students. Participating students will then create their own projects in different media forms, highlighting that theme- Northwoods 2012 Winners.

Running Club: This club provides 3rd-5th graders a chance to meet at regular times for running and fitness.

Science Fair: This annual event gives 3rd-5th graders a chance to plan, create, and learn from their own science projects.

Spirit Sprint: This is our primary fundraiser. Held in the fall, students obtain financial sponsors for the Sprint, and then all grades run, walk, and/or sprint for a set amount of time!

Spirit Wear: The PTA conducts an annual Spirit Wear sale, where students and their families are able to buy t-shirts, sweats, and other Northwoods gear.

Yearbook: Available for purchase by each student or family. This is a compilation of school memories, class photos, and individual school photos.
